Ottawa Shooting Rumors and Reveals: The Ottawa Gunman has Finally been Identified as Zehaf-Bibeau
Though the investigations are still in their early stages it is now confirmed that Zehaf-Bibeau was indeed in contact with other radical Islamists including one that travelled overseas to fight in Syria. The Canadian foreign minister reports that at this point there is no evidence to insinuate that this man is part of a larger terror group and was in fact working alone. According to the U.S counterterrorism officials Zehaf-Bibeau gained his connections via social media interaction with characters such as HasibullahYusufzai who is wanted for travelling to fight in Syria. Messages were shared between the two but there is no indication that the two were close.
Videos of the attack show Zehaf-Bibeau approach the Canadian War Memorial, which is actually across the parliament, wearing a scarf over his face and opening fire. The unexpected attack has left one dead and wounded two before he was shot and killed by Sgt. at Arms Kevin Vickers by this time he had managed to get inside the parliament. This magnifies a problem that may not have posed as a problem prior to this incident. These government building are quite open to the public and the fact that he had made it so far into parliament begs the question, shall this change in the future? It is a harrowing fact that even though he did not know it, he was in proximity of some of the highest placed Canadian officials such as the Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird.
Zehaf-Bibeau was a Canadian citizen that held dual citizenship; Libyan-Canadian citizenship at the time of the incident was in the city handling a revoke placed on his passport application to travel to Syria. According to different accounts he was an extremist that expressed very radical ideologies. Interestingly, Zehaf-Bibeauhad a criminal record showing a history of drugs and violence. During a pre- trial psychiatric evaluation he requested to be taken to jail claiming that it would make him a better Muslim and help with his drug problem.
