Samsung Eyes 2015 Launch of 60 GHz WI-Fi: 1GB File Download Can Be Done In 3 Seconds, Fastest In The Market
Samsung announced in a press relase that a Wi-Fi with 60 Ghz technology is currently underway. The said technology aims to speed up the data transmission to 575MB per second and is set to boost Internet speed five times compared to its current state of 108MB per second.
To give users an idea on how fast their new Wifi Internet will be, Samsung said that transferring a 1GB file from one device to another will take three seconds only. Isn't that wonderful? But is it really possible?
According to Dailymail, the tech-giant has already made previous attempts in making such high speed Wi-Fi. But their initial efforts always failed. The team working on the enhanced technology said that "previous attempts to use 60HHz band for WiFi have failed because they used millimetre waves that travel by line-of-sight."
As the waves travel by line of sight, walls interrupt the data transmission thus device will soon lose Wi-Fi signal and connections. This time, on the other hand, the team will be using "wide-coverage beam' forming antennae" that can resolve the obstacles face by this project.
"Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60 GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology," Samsung Head, Kim Chang Yong, said in the announcement.
Samsung is looking to launch the 60 Ghx Wi-Fi next year and noted that the said router can work better when used with smartphones and other Internet-ready devices.
On the other hand, PCWorld cleared that faster data transmission is entirely different from Internet speed. Activities such as browsing the web or lying on the couch and watching Netflix are usually limited by a person's Internet speed and not their router.
The report also explained that the Samsung commercialization launch for the new Wi-Fi technology will more likely be for industry-wide usage and not for a home Wi-Fi set-up.
Samsung spokesperson John Ribeiro said in an interview that the 60GHz will be available worldwide next year for industry level of commercialization "but there's nothing we could confirm at this point on when Samsung products supporting 60 GHz WI-Fi will be available in the market".
