Emma Watson Latest News: UN Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watsons' Passionate Speech
Emma Watson has been appointed earlier this year as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and she takes her role very seriously. The actress, known for her role as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter, received nothing but praise when she delivered her speech at the UN headquarters in New York City.
The "HeForShe" campaign is being supported by Emma Watson. The campaign aims to promote gender equality. In its website, it stated that "HeForShe is a solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one half of humanity in support of the other of humanity, for the entirety of humanity."
A part of Emma Watson's speech reads, "You might think: who is this Harry Potter girl? What is she doing at the UN? I've been asking myself at the same thing," she added. "All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make this better. And having seen what I've seen and given the chance, I feel my responsibility to say something."
An integral part of Emma Watson's speech is when she said that the issue of gender equality concerns not only the women but even the men too. A part of her speech said, "Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue too. Because to date, I've seen my father's role as a parent being valued less by society despite my needing his presence, as a child, as much as my mother's. I've seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help, for fear it would make them less of a men-or less of a man."
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that Emma Watson is doing a great job of helping stop the violence against women. Ban Ki-moon said his thanks to the actress for helping put the spotlight on the issue.
