Sony PlayStation Network News 2014: PlayStation 4 Online Gaming Service Faces Cyber-Attack From Hackers As Online Gamers Were Without Service For Several Hours
We have the latest for you on Sony PlayStation Online service hacking news. The online gamers who utilize the Playstation Network were without service for several hours on Sunday in the evening and Monday in the morning. This is after a group of hackers managed to gain access to the network. However, Sony was able to get the network up and running on Monday morning.
A group called Lizard Squad is said to be responsible for hijacking the network. The same group has also caused a Sony Online Entertainment executive's plane to be diverted. Lizard Squad, the same group, tweeted to the American Airlines that there may be explosives on the plane that John Smedely was riding in. Smedely is the executive onboard the flight, and was travelling from Dallas to San Diego, but the plane had to be re-routed to Phoenix due to the security threat on the air line. Smedely tweeted and confirmed that he was indeed aboard a plane which had to be re-routed.
When the plane landed in Phoenix, it was thoroughly inspected and no explosives were discovered. Sony says that no personal information was accessed by the hackers and the network was just overwhelmed with 'artificially high traffic which caused the network to become unstable and forces Sony to take it down. Sony's spokesman, Satoshi Nakajima, confirmed that the hack took place but did not confirm that Lizard Squad was responsible for the attack.
Sony's original blog post read as follows: "Like other major networks around the world, the Playstation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic. Although this has impacted your ability to access our network and enjoy our services, no personal information has been accessed. We will continue to work towards fixing this issue and hope to have our services up and running as soon as possible. We regret any inconvenience caused."
According to Sony, the service interruption has ended. Sony, sadly no strangers to hackers, wanted to make sure that users understood that they have seen no evidence of an intrusion or users' personal information associated with their accounts having been compromised.
