Oculus Rift Consumer Release Date: Rumors and Speculations all Point to May 2015
Numerous websites report that the Oculus Rift Consumer release date will be on May 2015, and that a playable demo will be available at the Oculus Connect conference on September 2014. Although no official word has been released from the Oculus official website or from its developers.
Virtual Reality technology has been in countless developments from different companies through the years, and it seems like the Oculus team is closest to making it a viable product for consumers. The development of the Oculus Rift began back in 2012 with a Kickstarter campaign with the idea of a head-mounted Virtual Reality display integrated for video games. On September 2012, the first Developer Kit was given to backers of the campaign who pledged $300 or more, while a limited run of 100 unassembled prototypes was also given to pledgers of $275 or more. Games with full or partial support of the Oculus Rift include: Left 4 Dead, Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Portal 2, Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Dishonored and BioShock. Games that are currently under development for Oculus Rift support include: Doom 4, Xing: The Land Beyond, Zed Absolution, and Wicked Paradise. More and more games are going under development; gamers, consumers, and other interested parties have more reason to be excited with this new gaming experience.
The Oculus Rift consumer release date has been a hot topic for months now. The acquisition by Facebook and the release of the Oculus Rift Developer Kit 2 last July left people with high expectations on the possibility that the next big announcement would be the official Oculus Rift consumer release date. Rumors arose that the possibility of a late 2014 release date was going to be announced soon, but as of today, Forums, blogs, and websites have been reporting that May 2015 will be the official Oculus Rift consumer release date, but due to the fact that there is no official announcement yet, we should take this with a grain of salt.
The Oculus Connect conference on September 19/20 would perhaps shed some light on the official consumer release date. The slated speakers on the event include Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey, President Brendan Iribe and game programmers John Carmack and Michael Abrash.
