Sonic the Hedgehog Film Set to Go into Production
The classic video game character Sonic The Hedgehog is in the production stages of becoming an upcoming feature film. Sony has signed on to make a live-action movie based on the popular blue hedgehog, known for his jumps, spins and red shoes.
Sony is in discussion with Japanese production company Marza Animation Planet to create a live action/ animation hybrid and that will also feature Dr Eggman as a villain in the movie.
"There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base," Columbia Pictures president of production Hannah Minghella shared. "Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."
The film currently has no release date, but Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are writing the screenplay. Sony did a CG-animated/live-action hybrid with the Smurfs movies as well.
Upright Citizens Brigade LA alumni Evan Susser and Van Robichaux have been hired to pen the script - this would be their first feature film in production - under producer Neal H. Moritz (the Fast and Furious franchise). Japanese CG animation production company Marza, a subsidiary of Sega, is also producing.
Sonic has sold over 140 million games and is a $1 billion property that already has a Cartoon Network TV show titled "Sonic Boom" coming this fall. While a Sonic movie comes with a built-in fanbase, it's too early to tell if this movie would be a success. Many video games to movies have a rough transition and hybrid CG/live action project requires a blockbuster budget.
