'Mule' Meme Sends Shirley Caesar to No. 1 on Hot Gospel Songs
This week Gospel music legend Shirley Caesar earns her first #1 record. "Hold My Mule," featuring Albertina Walker and Milton Brunson makes an ascend from 2 to 1 on Billboard Gospel Songs chart. Even though Caesar started singing in 1951,Caesar's previous career high was the No. 3 "God Will Make a Way" in 2013.
The song surged in popularity recently, thanks to social media memes (like the Mannequin Challenge) who came up with the #UNameIt Challenge. This started when DJ Suede The Remix God created an update of "Mule," with special focus on the line, "beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes" among other food shout-outs, obviously timely just ahead of Thanksgiving.
"Mule" gained greater traction when Chris Brown posted a video dancing to the song, inspiring further viral clips.
