American Idol Winner Trent Harmon is Adding His Gospel Soul into His Country Album

Trent Harmon is the newest American Idol winner. He won the fifteenth season of American Idol on April 7, 2016. His winning coronation single "Falling" was written by singer songwriter and American Idol judge Keith Urban with Dallas Davidson and Brett James. For winning the title, Harmon received a Ford car and a recording contract with Big Machine Records. La'Porsha Renae was runner-up.
Harmon is currently planning to record his new album. It will be a country record but he will definitely be bringing his Gospel and soul roots to it. "I've been saying 'country soul,' and I don't really know what that means just yet, but I do, you know?" Harmon tells TV Guide. "Soul music is in right now, and it's cool to sing, but it's what comes out of me naturally."
He adds, "If I'm singing gospel music or I'm singing country music or I'm singing pop music, I sing it soulfully. That's just how it comes out. So I feel like that's going to come through on this country album."
Harmon is also a committed Christian. He is passionate about his faith and he is not shy to share it. Harmon started in music when his mother taught him to sing "Amazing Grace" when he was the age of 5, and he grew up singing in church. He still attends church every Sunday.
While Harmon calls his music "country soul," Big Machine's Scott Borchetta has another term for it: a "Justin Timberlake country record."
"To be mentioned in any kind of anything as JT is a big deal," Harmon responds. "It's a lot of responsibility, but I'm good with it."
Borchetta tells Taste of Country that Harmon's foray into country music is 100-percent organic: "I think it's very true to who he is," he observes. "He's always done country in his set. He lives on a true farm-to-table farm and restaurant ... he's a country boy."
Harmon's forthcoming record is still in its infancy, but the singer reveals that it may feature duets with his fellow Idol contestants, including runner-up La'Porsha Renae.
"I feel like Porsha and I will probably be doing music together at some point, but I think it could be really cool to get Jenn Blosil on something," Harmon says. "She's got a unique voice, and she's quirky. I like quirky ... I think her voice would be really cool. I think we could do some neat stuff. I hadn't thought of that until right now."
