Tanya Tucker Cities Prayer as the Means that Healed Her of Her Depression
Recently, country music veteran Tanya Tucker was interviewed by Dan Rather in an all-new episode of "THE BIG INTERVIEW," premiering Tuesday, February 2, at 8/7c. Click here for local listings. During the intimate hour-long discussion, Tucker reveals that it is prayer that brought her through her depression.
"I think that's probably what helped me the most, is, I went to a monastery right outside of Aspen, and I went really for my friend, who had breast cancer, and it had spread," she says. "But she's in remission now, and we're so thankful for that. But she had went to this monastery where there's 20 monks outside of Aspen, and I really connected with it. When you have 20 women praying, laying their hands on you and saying prayers or you, it's pretty powerful. Very powerful. And I found some sort of a strength there. And I'm going back again this year."
Tucker reveals that the death of her mother was part of the cause of her depression. "I lost my mother last year," the iconic country star tells Closer Weekly, adding, "You try and mentally prepare for it, but when it comes, you are not prepared for the emotional toll it takes."
Tucker also suffered a frightening accident that threatened her singing ability, after undergoing a routine dermal abrasion skin treatment.
"Something went wrong and I suffered second and third-degree burns all over my face, in my nose and down my lungs. It was awful," she recalls. "It also changed my voice, which has been another obstacle I've had to overcome. I've had to struggle to reach certain notes, which I never had to do before."
The stress of all those hard times happening at once threw the singer into a deep depression.
"I probably spent half a million dollars on doctors," she admits. "I took medications, did shock treatments and tried everything with the exception of being put into a straitjacket. And yet somewhere in the midst of all this, I cut 10 tracks for a new album!"
