Cheri Keaggy Reveals Exclusive Details to Her Upcoming Album "No Longer My Own"
Contemporary Christian songwriter and singer Cheri Keaggy is heading back into the studio to record her ninth album, "No Longer My Own." Just like her previous album "So I Can Tell," she is utilizing Kickstarter so that fans can help in financing the project.
With a quiver full of new songs that are burning in her soul, Keaggy prays No Longer My Own will inspire and embolden fellow saints to live more fearlessly for Christ. "John 16:33 says, I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. In these troubled times, this is a message I believe the world needs to hear," Keaggy declares.
We are so honored to be able to catch up with Cheri Keaggy for this exclusive Hallels' interview.
Hallels: Thank you so much for doing this interview with us. You are currently recording your ninth album "No Longer My Own." Is there a theme that runs right through this new record?
I think the theme is still developing, but I feel strongly about the title cut, "No Longer My Own", a song inspired by A Covenant Prayer popularized by John Wesley. But, in general, acknowledging the troubled times we are living in, I believe this album will serve to embolden saints to live more fearlessly for Christ.
Hallels: What will the musical direction of this new record? Will it be worship? Contemporary Christian pop? Christian dance?
This album will lean toward a folk-pop-worship presentation with very scriptural lyrics and an emphasis on the simplicity of a piano based ballad.
Hallels: Will this new album be different or/and similar to "So I Can Tell"?
Probably more similar musically than different, in that I will be working with many of the same musicians. However, these are songs written further out from the season of loss and grief and subsequent healing that marked my last project. There are songs of reflection, yes, but also songs written from the perspective of where I am today and encouragement for fellow sojourners of the faith.
Hallels: How much of the record has been written now? And how many songs will the new CD have?
Ten is always a good number. So, we'll shoot for ten and if we go beyond that, it'll be a bonus! I've already written the majority of the songs and have demo'd several of them with Uncle Phil. This helps me to see what I have and discover what is missing. Lord willing, I'll be able to write a few more over the holidays in preparation for going into the studio in January 2015.
Hallels: You are also asking fans to be involved in this project by helping you fund it via Kickstarter. For our readers who are not familiar with Kickstarter, how does this work?
Basically, fans and supporters are given the opportunity to sow a seed into an artist's ministry by pledging up front for different rewards, such as a personalized/autographed CD before the official street date, having their name included in the CD packaging as a ministry partner, or hosting a concert at a location of their choosing, whether at their home church or in their own living room. We are seeking to raise $25,000 in 30 days to cover all the expenses related to the album. This is especially helpful for artists who no longer have the financial resources of a major record label, but who still have very viable ministries as a result of life experience and many years pouring out from the platform.
Hallels: When do you anticipate the release of this new album?
Lord willing, we'll have finished CDs in hand by Spring 2015, although the official street date will likely be Summer 2015. Kickstarter backers are the very first to receive the finished CD.
Hallels: If our readers would like to donate and catch up with the album's development, where can they go?
