INTERVIEW: The Royal Royal Shares on Their New Album 'The Return of the King' and Their Plans for 2014

THE ROYAL ROYAL's released their sophomore album, THE RETURN OF THE KING, this week on March 4, 2014. Brothers Nathan and Gabriel Finochio are back again to create worship music for the next generation on their sophomore release, with fresh, yet honest lyrics on personal, yet universal songs. The album was released in partnership with The Paradigm Collective and distributed by Central South Distribution and Sony RED.
THE RETURN OF THE KING will feature 10 tracks including the lead single "Holding On" and the follow-up single "Every Little Bit Of Praise," which debuted at #19 on the AC/CHR charts. The latest single to hit radio is "Real Strength."
We would like to thank The Royal Royal for taking the time to speak with us.
How does it feel to be releasing your new album The Return of the King on March 4?
RR: It's a combination of things. Agony, delight, joy, anticipation, and agony.
How would you describe your sound for people that haven't heard of you guys and what artists have influenced your sound?
RR: Our sound is probably pop in the sense that we want to appeal to the populace. We love people. And we want everyone to enjoy our music. And on that note, we've been heavily influenced by popular artists like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach, and others that start with the letter b.
Tell us the story behind your song, "Real Strength"?
RR: There are always moments of discouragement in life. There are always seasons of disillusionment that we experience. And Real Strength our cry that comes from the middle of the tempest. The word "real" is an old word that the Church of the Dark Ages chose to describe the presence of Christ among His people. Being ordinary humans and living in extraordinary times of discouragement and despair, the Church needed a word that would be substantive-something that actually was there. Christ gave us His body through the Eucharist to be something that is actually there. A REAL grace. A REAL strength. For the Christian, Christ is the definition of reality. He will never leave nor forsake us, and even in the Dark Ages of our lives and the new Dark Ages of our times, His presence is real.
What advice would you give to up and coming bands?
RR: Be an artist before you create art. Don't treat the art you create for the Church as something accidental. Do it on purpose and most of all with purpose. And you don't have to take yourself seriously to be an artist, (in fact, most good artists don't) just your art.
What is the biggest mistake or funny moment you have had on stage while performing?
RR: We were playing at a large youth camp in Kentucky and my zipper was down the entire time. Kids were worshipping Jesus, hysterically laughing at me, and being scarred for life.
If you could collaborate with one Secular Artist and one Christian Artist, who would you choose?
RR: Thome York from Radiohead and Brooke Ligertwood
What are some personal favorite scriptures of yours and/or any good books you have been reading?
RR: I just finished reading The Screwtape Letters and found it to be devilishly delicious. Two favourite Scripture verses are John 3:16-17 and Revelations 3:16-17.
If you guys could each play professionally for any sports team for one day, who would you guys pick?
RR: Football for the Denver Broncos.
What are your touring plans for 2014?
RR: We're touring with our friends Vertical Church Band and afterwards going overseas to Asia.
