‘Fury’ Movie Review: On Living and Dying in War
'Fury' Movie Review: On Living and Dying in War
"Fury" is a 2014 American war film, which is set during Wold War II in April 1945, the last month of war in Europe. The Allies proceed to their final push into Nazi Germany.
A battle-trained United States Army Staff Sergeant in the 66th Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Division named Don "Wardaddy" Collier commands an M4A3E8 Sherman tank named Fury, along with its five-man verteran crew, on a mission beyond enemy lines.
Aside from Army Staff Sergeant Collier, the crew includes Boyd "Bible" Swan, gunner; Grady "Coon-Ass" Travis, loader; and Trini "Gordo" Garcia, driver; and Norman Ellison, driver/bow gunner. Ellison had to take the place of the original assistant of the tank, after the latter has been killed in battle. He has never seen the inside of a tank previously and alone, he experiences the devastations of war.
The film cast members include Brad Pitt as U.S. Army Sergeant Don "Wardaddy" Collier, Shia LaBeouf as Boyd "Bible" Swan, Jon Bernthal as Grady "Coon-Ass" Travis, Michael Pena as Trini "Gordo" Garcia, Jason Isaacs as "Old Man" Waggoner, Scott Eastwood as sergeant Miles, and Logan Lerman as Norman "Machine" Ellison.
Other members of the cast include Xavier Samuel as Second Liutenant Parker, Brad William Henke as Sergeant Davis, Eugenia Kuzmina as Hilda Meier, Kevin Vance as Sergeant eterson, Branko Tomovic as German Corporal, Iain Garrett as Sergeant Foster, Stella Stocker as Edith, and Alicia von Rittberg as Emma.
Filming started last September 2014 in Hertfordshire, England while the principal photography took place in Oxfordshire last September 30, 2013. Filming moved on for more than a month in different locations, including the Coty of Oxford, and ended last November 13 last week.
The tank commander, Wardaddy, is portrayed by Pitt as the epitome of a merciless hard-hearted soldier. His primary goal is to kill Nazis since it is what he is made for, just like Fury, according to Express.
The film is written and piloted by David Ayer. The film has shown and given viewers the opportunity to experience war. It has allowed the audience to see war as it should be, as per Times of Oman. The overall war experience presented muddy roads because of rain, the tanks rolling over bodies, crushing them while blood oozes out. Trucks can also be seen loaded with corpses. Blades are in the eye as well as bloody sharp weapons, along with bullets in the head. Limbs are blown apart and terrains are on fire.
According to Washington Post, the war in the story brings out both enlightenment and darkness in man. Good in such a way that Warddady as a father figure mentors his son "how to hunt. Bad in the sense that you are forced to kill, even if you haven't done it before." Overall, Wardaddy teaches viewers how to keep his people alive to fight as well as his perspective on life and death.
