Williams Sisters News and Updates: Williams get Apology from Russian Tennis Chief Shamil Tarpischev
'William Brothers' was a derogatory term that was used by the Russian tennis chief Shamil Tarpischev to refer to the William sisters. A term clearly directed at their physique and mastery of the game. This is not the first time that derogatory comments have been made directed at strong women whose prowess shines through in their field of profession. 'Hits like a man' is another example of some of the phrases used to describe these sisters by fellow players and commentators and it has gone by ignored for such a long time. It is a statement that undermines the power of the female spirit.
However, WTA has decided to use this incident as an illustration of its lack of tolerance for such acts. Chief Shamil Tarpischev has been suspended from any tour activities for a period of one year and a fine of $25,000 for his gross mistake. The incident took place during an interview where he question a fellow athlete how it felt to play against the William sisters and quickly interjecting 'William brothers' before receiving a response. He goes on even to mention that the sisters were indeed scary to look at.
Such statements have gone unnoticed in prior instances and one would wonder why this particular case was treated with such harshness. It is clear that WTA has had enough and are ready to protect their athlete; which is ideal considering that the sisters are placed as their best asset. Additionally, while it may seem to be okay for fellow athletes to kid and make fun it is definitely unacceptable for an official to make such a statement. Though he claims the comments were taken out of context and had no ill intent Serena confirms that they received a written apology from Shamil Tarpischev for his comments.
