Clapping Hands with Sunday Best's Andrea Helms: An Exclusive Interview

Andrea Helms, known for her powerful voice and performances on Season 4 of BET's Sunday Best, is a lifelong singer and worshipper from Odessa, Texas. Andrea's journey to first runner-up on Sunday's Best was one of faith and favor. Andrea admits that she left that platform as a much stronger and more confident performer. Andrea demonstrated her range and ability with her personal renditions of songs performed by some of the industry's top talent including Tremaine Hawkins, Whitney Houston and Martha Munizzi. She continued to display her boldness as she put her authentic stamp on seven popular songs for her debut album, Moving Forward.
Signed to DREAM Gospel Records, Helms will be releasing her second Spirit-filled worship album "Clap Your Hands." Andrea Helms currently resides in Denton, TX with her husband and son. She is still currently the minister of music at her childhood church, Friendship Church, where her husband is now the pastor. We are honored to be able to catch up with her for this Hallels' exclusive interview.
Hallels: Congratulations on your forthcoming release of "Clap Your Hands." How did your appearances and performances at BET Sunday's Best helped you in preparation for this album?
Being on Sunday Best provided me with an instant audience. This album was possible because of the stage I was afforded.
Hallels: Did you approach this album any different as compared to your debut record "Moving Forward?"
Yes I did. My first album was a compilation of songs I performed on Sunday Best. Before I began this album I wanted listeners to hear and see the different sides of me.
Hallels: What are you most excited about this new album?
This album stretched me! So, no matter what style you prefer I believe you will find a song you can connect to because of the versatility in it. That makes me very excited!
Hallels: What are some of the lessons you want your listeners to take away after hearing the album?
This album has a continual theme of how good God is and who and what He is in our life. Yes, we all go through struggle but we don't have to stay there. Jesus is our hope. In the midst of trial you must find a praise to get you through your issue.
Hallels: In your first album, you placed your authentic voice and seal on seven covers, are there any cover songs on this album?
Not really. There is a tag on I'm Yours that people will recognize. Other than that these are new songs.
Hallels: As a worship leader at Friendship Church and having this worship CD coming out, how would you define worship?
Worship is simply obedience to God's will. It's better to obey than to sacrifice. If we truly love God we will obey him and His commandments. This becomes worship.
