Pastor Jamal Bryant Leads National Prayer Protest to Honor George Floyd on 5th Anniversary of His Death

In solemn remembrance of George Floyd on the fifth anniversary of his death, Dr. Jamal H. Bryant, senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, led a national prayer protest outside a Target store in Conyers, Georgia, on Saturday, May 25, 2025. The demonstration, held in solidarity with over 60 churches across the United States, called attention to ongoing racial injustice and the recent rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts by major corporations, including Target.
The peaceful protest lasted 9 minutes and 29 seconds-symbolizing the amount of time former police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck on May 25, 2020. This act of remembrance doubled as a call to corporate and community accountability.
"Five years ago, America made a promise to be better. To see mega-companies now walk away from diversity, equity, and inclusion is a stark contrast from where we were then," said Pastor Bryant. "Our prayerful protest today is a reminder that we have not forgotten George Floyd's name or the commitment made in his memory."
The action also highlighted Bryant's ongoing "Target Fast" campaign-a protest initiative challenging Target's withdrawal from its $2 billion racial equity commitment made in 2020. Bryant has been vocal about the need for sustained investment in racial justice beyond performative gestures.
This nationwide effort brought together faith leaders, activists, and community members who share a collective vision for justice, equity, and lasting systemic change. Churches participating from coast to coast echoed the prayer protest, reinforcing that George Floyd's legacy remains a catalyst for accountability and reform.
