ELEVATION RHYTHM “Victory Lap” Album Review

Prime Cuts: GOODBYE YESTERDAY, Where Oh Where, Abba I know
Overall Grade: 3.5/5
Gen. Z has finally found its voice in worship. ELEVATION RHYTHM is passionate about creating a sound that Gen. Z worshippers are proud to sing and share. To their credit, their songs have gained much traction amongst countless youth and young adult groups. This album's lead single, "GOODBYE YESTERDAY," has also become the group's first top 10 hit on Billboard's Hot Christian Song chart. There are certainly more hits to be unearthed with the group's third and latest album, "Victory Lap."
The aforementioned "GOODBYE YESTERDAY," co-written and performed by Gracie Binion (daughter of worship leaders David and Nicole Binion), is a highlight. Loud, rollicking, and featuring edgy electric guitars, the song is a kiss-off to the unregenerated life. The intertwining of the song with the hymn "I Have Decided" is a pure touch of genius. "Finally Free" and "Believe It," both clocking in below 2 minutes, are infectious acapella group pieces featuring fun-sounding electronic drums.
More out-of-the-box moments come with the unusual-sounding "Where Oh Where," with its offbeat and unique pacing. With a yearning for more authenticity from Gen. Z, "I Was. But God" is a testimonial song about how God helps us overcome our sins. Those who love Tiffany Hudson croon a worship ballad will love "Abba I Know." Though the song suffers from over-repeated riffs, Hudson's performance draws out a personal connection with the divine.
Not all the songs work: songs such as "At the Altar," "Most High," and "Alive Again" all suffer from some form of sloppiness in crafting hooks that are palatable and lyrics that don't blend into the background. Nevertheless, for people who want to worship music congruous with the times and a bit of surprise here and now, "Victory Lap" may be it.
